Some news...

Hello! I've just got back from three days in Sydney and one in Canberra. I flew out Saturday night after First Comes Love, and met up with James and our friends Denis and Laura for a few days of fun times! We had tickets to a couple of Vivid Live shows, both of which were brilliant (Janelle Monae and Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly & Sufjan Stevens), and we were also keen to check out the newly re-jigged MCA (The Clock was amazing, and I have now developed an obsession with Aboriginal basket weaving!). The other thing high on my agenda was a trip to the new Koskela showroom, which was, as expected, completely amazing. It's like every big-name Aussie designer in one place, plus an amazing cafe, plus The School!

So that was Sydney, but why Canberra? Well, it might be time for some news! A couple of months ago James was offered a fantastic speechwriting job there, so we're on the move! Actually, he already moved over a couple of weeks ago, but I won't be following for another couple of months yet. It's a huge move for me because I'm very much a Perth girl (I'm so not going to cope with the cold!), and of course it means big changes for Mr Sparrow. It's all very convoluted, but here is basically what's happening: during August and September, the lovely Elli will be managing the shop while I'm away, and during this time the shop will be open Thursday - Sunday (that's right, we'll be open Sundays for the first time!), and of course online all the time. Then around early October I'll return to Perth and, sadly, shut down the Subiaco store. It won't be the end of Mr Sparrow, though, as I'll continue to run the online store from Canberra. There will also be another round of terrarium and kokedama workshops before I leave (which I'll be announcing very soon), and I also plan to run some other workshops in gift-wrapping, wreath-making and other fun things on return trips between October and the end of the year. Of course, this blog will be here throughout the changes, so keep an eye out for announcements of workshops, sales and other fun events to come! I'm very sad to be saying goodbye to this space as I have really fallen in love with it over the years and I think it has come to be something special. My very favourite thing about running Mr Sparrow has been seeing and hearing all the lovely, excited comments from my customers as they walk through the door, and it makes me sad to think that this happy little space won't be around much longer.

Anyway, it's not goodbye just yet, but I wanted to let you all know what was in the works so hopefully you can help me through this tough transition! Despite my sadness, though, I'm also excited about embarking on this new adventure, and really looking forward to improving the online store and hopefully having the time to work on some other creative projects that have been on the backburner for a while.

I just want to thank you all for being such enthusiastic supporters of my little store over the last four years, and if you've been meaning to come by the shop lately, please make sure you do drop by in the next few months and say hello before it's goodbye!

I'll be back later today with all the news from First Comes Love, and lot of pretty pictures!

Happy Friday...and a tune for your weekend!

Happy Friday! Only one more sleep till First Comes Love and I'm just about ready! I've got a
a whole heap of kokedama, terrariums and nests ready to go, and this morning I made this wreath.

Now for a tune for your weekend! It's birthday week for me, with five birthdays happening within seven days (two close friends, one nephew, one sister and one husband!). Two of those birthdays are in fact today, so a big happy birthday to Eko and Andreas! Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday" has to be the ultimate birthday tune, and James and I have a tradition of waking each other up to its cheerful tune on each of our birthdays. So here it is, originally written for Martin Luther King, Jr., but today going out to Denis, Eko, Andreas, James and Katie! Happy birthday, all!

I hope you have a fantastic weekend, and if you're heading to First Comes Love tomorrow or on Sunday, Elli or I will see you there!

Wallpaper*

This is something I've been meaning to write about for a really long time! In March last year I received an email that began:

"I'm writing from the picture desk of Wallpaper* Magazine City Guides in London...We are currently working on the 2012 edition of our Perth guide, and are very keen to include Mr Sparrow."

Needless to say, I was extremely excited! Wallpaper* City Guides are, I believe, the most prestigious travel guides around and have a strong design focus. Published by renowned visual arts publishers, Phaidon, the guides present a tightly edited, discreetly packaged list of the best architecture, hotels, bars, restaurants and cultural spots from top cities around the world. As photo editor Nabil Butt explained to me, "The travel experts from international design magazine Wallpaper* handpick the most exclusive locations specifically for the design savvy traveller."

The Perth guide has been out for a couple of months now and I finally got my hand on a copy a few weeks ago! Even knowing Wallpaper*'s reputation, I have to say I was surprised by just how spot on this guide is. They really have picked out the very best of the best in terms of architecture, hotels, bars, shops, escapes and landmarks (yes, we have - a few - landmarks!) - think Council House, Eight Nicholson, Mrs Brown, West End Deli, the State Theatre Centre, B&M Store and many more. There are also lots of facts and figures, a neighbourhood guide and an insider's guide by Conor and Romina of Test Tube and Zekka fame! If you're new to Perth, heading this way, or just feel like being a tourist in your own city (which can be a very good thing), you can pick up a copy at most good book stores. Thank you, Wallpaper*! It is such an incredible honour to be included in this prestigious publication.

And here is me at perhaps my proudest moment...

(By the way, I've recently got into instagram - a little late, I know, but you can find me here :))

Petrafanella

These lovely new knits have just arrived from Perth designer Peta Galloway of Petrafanella. There are nice chunky 100% wool cowls in fantastic colour block mixes, and 100% wool wristwarmers with sweet heart designs, but my favourites are the rope scarves, which are a 90% wool 10% mohair mix and come in some lovely neutral colours like smoke and olive. I'm looking forward to throwing one of these on once it gets a little cooler! We have a range of colours and designs in store now, and each is handmade by Peta right here in Perth. I'll try and get these up into the online store in the next week or so, too, so keep an eye out...

Fisheye

As well as shooting a virtual tour of Mr Sparrow last week, Marianne also took these (and many more!) fantastically other-wordly stills with her amazing fisheye lens. I love the effect!

If you haven't seen the virtual tour through our facebook page, you can check it out here. Pretty amazing, huh?? Expect to see it up on the website in the next week or so.

Also, check out this flat panorama of the store...

Doesn't it look HUGE?? Ahh what I could do if I actually had that kind of space!

Preparations

I spent most of yesterday elbow-deep in soil, making kokedama and terrariums for First Comes Love this weekend...

As I was making quite a few, I set up a little station in the backyard and got stuck into it - it was quite fun working assembly-line style (I usually only make a couple at a time). By the time I had whipped up nine kokedama and four terrariums, though, I was about done with all things green and dirty for a little while! That said, I do have some other pretty green things in the works for First Comes Love, and I can't wait to set up my display on Saturday!

Sale is GO!

Mr Sparrow's HUGE ONLINE SALE is now live! Check out the sale section online for lots of lovely things at 50% off! Most items are very low in stock, so don't dawdle :)

Funky leggings

It seems like the ombre trend is still going strong and I'm not complaining! How amazing are these new colour-blend mugs from KAHLA Porcelain? Called Update, they're the latest addition to KAHLA's Touch! range, which features a velvety-soft surface that looks and feels amazing (and, incredibly, is dishwasher-safe!). You might remember we've stocked the Touch! Eat and Drink sets and carafes in the past...actually, we still have one carafe that will be part of the sale next week :)

I love KAHLA's description of the Update mugs: "It is as if your mug was wearing funky leggings." Totally. And with such beautiful, bright colour combinations, I can't imagine not starting the day with a spring in my step after a coffee out of one of these!

Happy Friday...and a tune for your weekend!

Happy Friday! It's the most beautiful day here today! The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and my yellow rose is going gangbusters.

Now for a tune for your weekend! I put on the Perfume Genius album Put Your Back N 2 It a couple of days ago and haven't been able to stop playing it since. It's just beautiful. This song, "Hood", is perhaps the most beautiful of all. I hope you enjoy it!

Have a lovely weekend!

P.S. There's a new post on my other blog, givemakewrap, today, too!

360°

Yesterday I had a really fun photoshoot at Mr Sparrow! My friend Marianne owns a business called Panthrough, who do 360° photography. She has done virtual tours for a whole pile of different businesses, and recently did an amazing one of Sculpture by the Sea. She's also going to be working with Google in the future as part of their Business Photos program, which sounds amazing.

After she recently took some incredible 360° product photos for me, I asked Marianne if she could do a virtual tour of Mr Sparrow. I plan to use it on the website to make the Mr Sparrow online experience more like being in the actual store (I have a few other exciting changes to the website planned, too!). I can't wait to see how it turns out! In the mean time, check out the Claystone Bird Teapot in 360 or take a look at Marianne's website to see some other amazing virtual tours.

Mushrooms

Aren't they cute?! I bought these mushrooms from The Oak Leaves a while ago and they arrived last week. I had been expecting something pretty cute, but when they arrived I was beside myself! Not only are they tiny (I don't know if you can tell the size from these images, but take a look at the liquidambar seed pod in the bottom photo to give you an idea...), but they are really beautifully made - each one is just perfect! I plan on using them in terrariums, but in the mean time I couldn't bear to keep them boxed up, so I filled a tiny little wooden bowl with some fake moss and popped it on display alongside my Dwellingup treasures. A perfect little scene to welcome in the winter!

Christina from The Oak Leaves is on bed rest at the moment, but I definitely recommend checking out her etsy store when it's back in action if you're looking for something super-cute to jazz up your terrariums.
