Grey and green

A little while ago I did a lot of experimenting with concrete. This pot was one of my earlier experiments (hence the chunks missing from the side!), but I rediscovered it on the weekend when looking through the shed. When Eko and Rick moved into their new place last year I made them a similar planter and potted it with succulents as a housewarming present, and I decided this one, while a bit battered, would still look pretty nice in a similar set-up.
I really, really love concrete. I love its smooth but imperfect surface and its natural, unobtrusive appearance. And there's something about the combination of the mottley grey of the concrete and the sagey green of the succulents that just gives me a good feeling :)
I'm working on some latex moulds at the moment and have worked out a concrete mix that works a treat so I'm looking forward to making some more planters soon...and maybe even some for Mr Sparrow!

I ADORE this - how inspiring ... please share your secrets (if may be so cheeky) maybe even a short tutorial? How did you get this shape? Do you have an outer and inner mould (stupid question?) And what of your mix? Can you use standard concrete? Do you think you can colour it? It's so cool - you MUST sell them in your shop! Well done! XX
ReplyDeleteThanks, Angy! I'll work on getting together a tutorial that will hopefully answer all your questions...but in the mean time, from memory I think this one was made using a bucket as the outer mould and an old microwave container as the inner mould (I've used all sorts of different things, with varying levels of success!). The mix is kind of complex and there are a few other steps involved, so as I say I'll work on that tutorial :) You can colour concrete using special dyes but I haven't tried it...yet!
DeleteHow funny. My partner and I were just discussing last night that we have not seen nice, handmade concrete planters available in Australia and were talking about making a few. I'd love to read a tutorial if you are thinking of doing one!
ReplyDeleteThese looks great.
Hi Belinda! I'm glad I'm not alone in my love of concrete planters! I'll let you know when I get a tutorial together :)
