Happy Friday!...and dahlias
Posted by

Happy Friday! In the little bottle this week are some cute pink peppercorns from Dwellingup. I love these because they dry beautifully and last forever.
Meanwhile, these beautiful dahlias are all through the shop! The big, bright red blooms are magnificent and making my window look so happy at the moment, but I love the little bendy buds, too. I have a couple of bunches of these for sale at the moment, so if you're looking for a bit of cheer this weekend drop by the shop and pick up a bunch...but be quick!
Have a great weekend!

Pothole Project

I'm a sucker for any kind of guerrilla pro-activism (think slinkachu, seed bombing, yarn bombing, the matchbox project and Mr Sparrow's very own matchbox treasure hunt last year), and when it's prettying up an ugly urban space, that's an added bonus! So I couldn't resist sharing this beautiful Projet nid de poule (or Pothole Project) by artist Juliana Santacruz Herrera. Using braided strips of colourful fabric, Herrera turned the dirty grey cracks and potholes of Paris's streets into bright and beautiful public art. Wouldn't it brighten your day to stumble across something like this?
Check out her flickr site for more photos, and if you like this sort of thing you should also take a look at this Lego installation and this yarnbombing video from Berlin. Found via Trendland.

Easter

Easter is always a family affair for us. We quite often go to Rottnest with my family, or down to Dwellingup, but this year we split our time between Dwellingup (with my mum, my cousin and her family) and Preston Beach (with James's family). There were kids galore - our two cute little nephews, Andreas and Dominic, at Preston Beach and my cousin's gorgeous kids, Darcy and Imogen, at Dwellingup - and of course plenty of Easter egg hunts!
We built sandcastles, visited the Easter fair, played Monopoly, went on a rainy bushwalk, gathered shiny chestnuts from their spiky shells, collected pretty Autumn leaves, played ping pong, and ate mum's delicious lamb roast and lemon meringue pie (she does bake!).
It was a perfect family Easter break. I hope yours was just as nice!
PS An update on the Thousands Awards...Mr Sparrow didn't manage to take out the Shop award (it went to Brisbane's The Outpost, which looks amazing), but we are just so honoured to have represented Perth in such fantastic company. Thanks so much to everyone that voted!

Happy Easter from Mr Sparrow! We are shutting down for the long weekend, closing from tomorrow (Good Friday) until next Wednesday 27th. Any orders placed online during that period will be processed when we re-open on the Wednesday.
We are open for another hour tonight, though (until 7pm), and have lots of sweet last-minute Easter gifts if you're on the hunt for something...including some beautiful 1920s Easter-themed egg cups that I just picked up the other day!
I hope you all have a wonderful, safe and delicious long weekend!

A whole raft of beautiful new designs from Brooklyn jeweller Lila Rice have just arrived at Mr Sparrow, and I'm having to stop myself from taking them all home! I just love all her designs so much. I own her Triangle Drape Pendant (thanks, Eko!) and seriously wear it almost every day!
New in are two more beautiful pendants, as well as some brilliant bracelets and a whole stack of killer earrings and studs. I have literally just unpacked these, so sorry they're not online yet, but I'll get them up asap! In the mean time, come in and take a look!

Looks like: Oakwright

Every so often Freedom comes up with some great furniture and they currently have a range called Oakwright which I think is beautiful. I particularly love the little stool (side table) and the bench and I think the sideboard would be seriously useful...

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday! These cute little berries are from some native bushes in our backyard...I'm not sure what they are - maybe you can help?
Also, I have finally got around to photographing the beautiful Yoshii hand towels and bath towels and they are now up on the website. Since there's no Bathroom category in the online store, you'll find them in The Living Room (and also currently under New). So lovely!
Have a wonderful weekend!

A DIY pallet garden
Posted by

We have an old pallet sitting out in our backyard, and if James doesn't turn it into a birdhouse, this might just be a lovely use for it! I have a bit of a soft spot for vertical gardens and have been dreaming of covering a wall with these for some time...in the mean time, though, one of these pallet gardens might give me my fix.
This looks pretty simple to create but there are step-by-step instructions and photos over at Life on the Balcony if you want to try one.

Passions Journals

Moleskine have just released an exciting new product called Passions Journals. Designed "for the loves of your life", they come in a range of themes, including a Recipe Journal, a Gardening Journal, a Style Journal, a Travel Journal and a Baby Journal, all of which are now at Mr Sparrow. Each one features themed sections to fill in, as well as blank tabbed sections you can personalise. There are also lots of cute sticky labels to use as you like, and heaps of relevant information, tables, charts, checklists and other useful bits and pieces. The cover of each journal is also embossed with images that relate to the theme.
When I had a flick through, I was really surprised by just how well-designed these are. The layouts are really practical and there is so much useful information in each one. I particularly like the Gardening and Recipe ones...and the Baby one would also be so great for an expectant mum!
Sorry, these aren't online yet but you can check them out in the store now...

Cards & Paper

Anna Macoboy
If you've been on the Mr Sparrow website in the last week you might have noticed that the online shop has a new category, Cards & Paper. This is where you can go to find the perfect card and wrapping paper to go with your gift...and if you leave me a message in the "shipping instructions" field at check-out, I will even write in the card for you! And of course you can always get your purchase gift-wrapped for free just by ticking the "gift wrapping" box (or, if you prefer, purchase another sheet of pretty paper online and we can use this). So you can get your package sent straight to your loved one...nice and easy!
I'm still busy filling out this category, but so far you can find cards from birdinabunnysuit (including cute new designs!), Beaumonde and TMOD (among others), and wrapping paper from Laikonik and MT. Check it all out here or click on Cards & Paper next time you're shopping online...

A dessert dream
Posted by
Anna Macoboy
So...it's been ages now but I still had to tell you about the dessert dinner party I had for my birthday! That's right, dessert and only dessert - in fact, five courses! It had been a dream of mine for a long time to have a meal like this - to have permission to eat dessert (several times over!) without first having to eat the necessary savouries. So when James had the brilliant idea of hosting a dessert dinner party for my 30th, it was like a dream come true!
Since we realised five courses of dessert wasn't everyone's dream, we tried to choose desserts that weren't too heavy and we kept the portions small so that nobody would be feeling too hideously ill by the end of the night! We designed it like a degustation menu, leading from "appetisers" to "dessert", and complete with palate cleanser! Here's what we ate:
- pop selection: an assortment of chocolate-dipped strawberry sticks, mini fairy floss sticks and crunchy almond toffee sticks
- ouefs a la neige : two snowy white "eggs" of light meringue floating in a sea of custard
- birthday cake: layers of sponge, custard and chocolate ganache
- blood orange sorbet: a delicious, refreshing sorbet to cleanse the palate
- crepes: vanilla-poached pears wrapped in crepes and drizzled with chocolate sauce
We (James, Eko and I) made everything except the birthday cake, which we bought from this place, and I have to say it was all delicious!
We were blessed with a really warm night, which was lucky since the only place we could seat 20 people was in our backyard! Inspired by this beautiful card, we stuck to a circle theme in pastel colours of pink, blue, yellow and grey with the decorations. We hung up strings of bare bulbs between the trees, along with some white circle garlands I'd made, and we covered the tables with pastel-coloured confetti. We had to use a mish-mash of crockery and cutlery but somehow it actually all worked and fit in with the colour theme. I also made a whole series of folded paper pinwheels, tied together with different pastel-coloured ribbons, which we attached to the back of the chairs. I had a lot of fun finding little elements that worked with the pastel circle theme, like straws and candles from here and twine from here. I also used some of this fantastic mt wrap.
And my favourite part? I always loved getting a lolly bag at the end of a party as a kid, so I made little take-home hot chocolate packs for each guest, inspired by the ones at this great party. There was a little bag of hot chocolate mix, a marshmallow and a chocolate-dipped wooden spoon (remember I mentioned them here?).
All in all, it was such a fun night! I couldn't have done any of it without a huge amount of help from three amazing people, though. James - among other things - made the delicious sorbet and crepe dishes, Eko came up with so many ideas for the decorations and did so much cooking and setting up on the day, and my mum cleaned up the whole garden and was out there in 35 odd degrees mowing the lawn like a mad woman, so thank you, everyone, for making my dessert dream come true!
Oh, and the balloons! Eko knew how much I loved this idea so when I arrived home from work on my birthday my room was filled with beautiful white helium balloons! Such a dream...
