Happy Friday!...and birthday cake

Happy Friday! I'm taking your outdoors this week because I couldn't bring myself to pick this perfect rose that's blossoming in our front garden at the moment. It's right next to our driveway so I get to say hello each time I come and go. Most of our rose bushes are inherited from our home's previous owners, but mum and I chose this one together a few years ago and I planted it myself so I feel especially proud when it produces something as pretty as this :)
And now for birthday cake! There's something about ridiculously-challenging, multi-layer, fancily-frosted cakes that I find inexplicably appealing! Normally any recipe that has multiple "processes" (thank you, MasterChef) gets put in the too hard basket...or at least the "dinner party" basket. But somehow the more complicated a cake recipe, the more I feel drawn to it - maybe it's just that the end result always looks so damn delicious! I attempted a multi-layer sour cream cake with meringue frosting for James's birthday last year and while it wasn't a disaster I wouldn't exactly say it turned out how I had imagined. And yet still I find myself considering this spectacular-looking Pink Vanilla Birthday Cake from Sweetapolita for Sunday's afternoon tea. Mr Sparrow deserves a beautiful birthday cake after all...
Well, we'll see how we go! If you turn up and see a clumsily-iced, single layer, very ordinary-looking number you'll know this one ended up in one of those aforementioned baskets :)
See you on Sunday, I hope! And in the mean time, have a lovely weekend!

Happy Birthday! This cake was divine. I'm going to try make it this week!
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you! :) Good luck with the cake - it wasn't too hard. The icing was the trickiest bit, I found! Thanks for coming along on Sunday!
ReplyDeleteThat's such a really great cake!
ReplyDeleteWould it be too cheeky to give my birthday cake contest a mention on your blog?
